; S'ports For Kids Ball 2001

Sports Ball 2001 - May 4th 2001

A Gala Fundraising Event

The 2001 S'port for Kids grant recipients were from two worthy groups; the Toronto City Mission and the "Stay in School, Keep the Peace Basketball" program established in conjunction with the Toronto Police Services and the Regent Park Community Centre.

Some of the special guests included Canadian Olympic athletes, Curtis Hibbert (Gymnastics), Tracey Wilson (figure skater), Peter Fonseca (marathon), Joe Ng (table tennis), and George Gross Jr. (water polo). Other special guests included World Figure Skating Champion Andrea McLaughlin Kelly, hockey legend Red Kelly, and honourary chair of the foundation and Richmond Hill mayor, William Bell.

A silent auction that included get-away weekends, ski memberships, computers, dinners plus many other items were bided on with enthusiasm. Of course, all proceeds went to the foundation and none of this would be possible without all our wonderful sponsors.

The entertainment was provided by the talented and soulful voice of Bobby Soul, one of the original members of the Platters. His classic performances of, The Great Pretender, Twilight Time, Only You, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, and My Prayer brought the crowd to its feet. The S'port for Kids Foundation thanks Bobby Soul for taking time out in his busy schedule to support our cause and join us in our festivities.

Keynote speaker George Gross Jr., an Olympic Water Polo medallist, spoke of the value of sport as a training ground for personal and professional success. Many of us feel the same way. Well spoken, Mr. Gross.
